A new detection of Rice Panicle Mite in AR The rice panicle mite was detected in Arkansas for the first time during August and September, from research greenhouses and field plots located at the Rice Research and Extension Center in Arkansas County (near Stuttgart, Arkansas). This followed detections of the mite in Texas and Louisiana earlier. Since this is a quarantined pest for the U.S., these detections were made in cooperation with APHIS and the Arkansas State Plant Board. So far, 228 rice samples have been processed with 22 positive. No positive samples have been found from commercial rice fields. APHIS and the State Plant Board have instituted regulatory action on all positive sites at our research facility. You can find more about this pest and these detections on the APHIS websiteand the NAPPO website. -Rick Cartwright, University of Arkansas, Cooperative Extension Service Online
